About the Intensive

Magnus Midwest Dance Intensive is a comprehensive summer training program for the pre-professional dancer. Our program is for the serious student only. The rigorous training requires dedication, commitment, hard work and spirit – bring these with you and we'll give you back the same.

Tuition, room and board total for the four week intensive is $3,590 (includes all activity, registration and transportation fees) and must be paid in full by May 4, 2012. Enrollment for the 2011 intensive will be limited to 100 dancers ages 12 - 21. Daily schedule includes three to five classes and rehearsals per day, six days a week.

Dancers register and move in on June 16. During registration dancers are checked into the University of Michigan-Flint dorms adjacent to our campus and the campus buildings used during the Intensive are open for touring. Dancers, parents, families and Intensive staff gather for orientation at the Flint Institute of Music followed by a complimentary pizza and salad get together.

Sunday, June 17 dancers eat brunch at the Residence Hall and then walk to Flint Institute of Music for placement classes. All classes and rehearsals are required and begin the morning of June 18. Dancers walk to and from the Residence Hall and classes each day accompanied by Intensive staff members.

Staff and faculty live in the dorms with the dancers. Dancers under the age of 18 do not leave the dorm unless accompanied by a Magnus Midwest Dance staff member. Hall suites house four dancers and include two double or four single bedrooms, a living room area with a television, a kitchen/dining area with a stove and refrigerator and two bathrooms. Each bedroom is furnished with a twin (long) bed, desk and armoire. Linens are provided and laundry facilities are available on each floor. Meals are provided each day at the University Center or Sarvis Conference Center.

Showcase performances are at 2:00 and 6:00 pm on Saturday, July 14. Every dancer performs in both shows. Parents and others are encouraged to make hotel reservations early if staying in Flint on performance weekend. There is a Holiday Inn Express conveniently located on our campus or other hotels just minutes away by car.

Scholarships are awarded on a merit-only basis by John Magnus at audition. Magnus Midwest Dance Intensive does not offer financial aid but we suggest you contact your local Rotary, Arts Council, mayor’s office, library or dance studio for scholarships or applications available in your area.
